Solid Waste Management Overview

GFL Environmental provides automated curb side solid waste management services at a flat rate of $30.00 bimonthly.

Solid Waste collection for everyone is picked up every Thursday unless otherwise posted.

Facts You Need to Know

Waste collection is established by Bylaw #03-2021
Users of this service must ensure solid waste is bagged and placed in the provided Waste Roll Cart(s) for pick up.
Solid waste must be at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the scheduled pick-up day or there is a risk that your solid waste will not be collected.
All solid waste must fit inside the provided Waste Roll Cart - overflow will not be collected.
The lid of the provided Waste Roll Cart must fully close to be accepted for collection.
Allow 1m space on all sides of the Waste Roll Cart and wheels are to be placed in the curb.
Yard waste is not collected as solid waste. Grass clippings, branches, leaves and other compostable material must be brought to the Town Compost Site located at the Town Shop (5310 – 48 Avenue).

Payment of Solid Waste Utility

The solid waste service is billed on a monthly basis for renters and a bi-monthly basis for home owners. Payment must be received at the Town Office by the due date shown on the utility bill. If you are paying a utility bill close to its due date, it is recommended that payment is made directly at the Town Office to avoid penalty.

Payment can be made by Cash, Cheque, or Interac:

In person: Legal Town Office, 5021 - 50 Street, Legal, Alberta during regular office hours (Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. AND 12:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. unless otherwise posted).
Drop box: Mail slot located at the entrance on the south side of the Town Office, 5021 - 50 Street, Legal, Alberta.
Financial institutions: At most chartered banks, trust companies, credit unions, or via telephone or internet banking. Please allow up to four business days for payment to reach us.
Pre-Authorized Automatic Withdraw: Set up an account with the Town for pre-authorized utility payments.

Waste Management & Beautification

Throughout the year, the Town of Legal provides Waste Program Initiatives to enhance the waste management system.

Town Wide Fall Clean-Up

October 6-7, 2021

The Town Wide Fall Clean-up is part of the Town's waste and beautification initiative.

Place any unwanted items in your front yard for pick up by the Town for disposal at the Landfill.

Contact the Town Office if you wish to participate in the program by calling 780-961-3773.

Freon bearing appliances require a $20 disposal fee prior to pick-up.

The following items are the responsibility of the Homeowner:

Agricultural chemical containers, liquids, paint, sewage/septic tanks, hazardous waste, toxic waste, chemical or chemical waste, radioactive waste, oil & filters, tires & rims, vehicle hulks, antifreeze, asbestos, tar, drums, batteries, animal waste.

These items can be dropped off at the City of Edmonton Eco Stations:

Landfill Permits

To purchase the Landfill Permit:

Complete the Landfill Permit Application Form
Email to main@legal.ca or print & drop off at Town Office (5021 50 St).
Bring payment (cash/cheque/Interac) to the Town Office:
- in the drop-off box at the Town Office
- mail to Town of Legal, Box 390, Legal AB, T0G 1L0.

Licenses/Permits can be mailed.

All weight in excess of the 1,000 kg annual limit is charged $39.27 per 1,000 kg and is applied on the January utility bill as "Landfill Overage" charges.

Freon extraction charges are $20.00.
